To be held at the Belvedere Golf and Country Club - September 16th, 2011

The Stars for Life Foundation is thrilled to be chosen as the recipient of the proceeds from the Mayor's first annual charity golf tournament. Thank you Mayor Lee for your support of the Stars for Life Foundation and your belief in the work that we do to help make Charlottetown a better place in which to live for our young people with an autism spectrum disorder.

We have Moved! Into our 1st Home and Resource Centre on PEI

In June, we moved our offices into our newly completed Home and Resource Centre located at 23 Maypoint Rd. Charlottetown, PE C1E 0H5.

Two of our 1 bedroom independent living apartments have been occupied by 2 young men with aspergers disorder. We are now setting up the resource centre and working on getting funding from government for the 24 hour staffing required by the individuals who will occupy the 3 assisted living suites. Furniture will now have to be ordered and equipment purchased to equip our house.

To date, we have received our kitchen pots, pans, dishes and cutlery and much more from Paderno and we are about to take ownership of lawn tractor thanks to Vesey's Seeds. Hambly's Country Wide helped out with the purchase of our large appliances. Thank you to all the companies who donated their services and time and to all the individuals who have made our dream a reality and to those who will continue to support our Foundation in improving the lives of young people with an autism spectrum disorder. This is just the beginning!!

Red Cross 2010 Humanitarian Award Recipient for PEI

Carolyn Bateman - President of the Stars for Life Foundation has been honoured with the Red Cross Humanitarian of the year award.

Carolyn Bateman has been raising awareness and advocating for the treatment and education of children with autism for more than two decades. Her dedication to this cause stems from a very personal connection with the disorder. Her son Adam was diagnosed with autism in 1986, at the age of four. Adam, now a young man, is working towards a business certificate at UPEI in spite of having severe autism. While Carolyn has tirelessly sought the best treatments and education for her non-verbal son, she has also focused her attention on helping other families impacted by autism in her community and beyond.

Carolyn Bateman is a co-founder and past president of the Autism Society of Prince Edward Island. In 2002, she also co-founded the Stars for Life Foundation for Young Adults with Autism, where she continues to serve as president. Over the years, she has dedicated time and effort to fundraising events and campaigns, including spearheading the annual "Stars for Life," Evening of the Stars dinner and auction as well as an annual car draw to raise money for a resource centre for autism in Charlottetown. Carolyn has been instrumental in the creation and marketing of useful products to assist in the education of children with autism. The proceeds return to the Foundation to help with their work in providing continuing education for families and young people with autism once they leave the school system.

She has attended the International Symposium on Autism to bring back information on the latest research and interventions in the field many times over the years and she has travelled several times to Syracuse University to study the latest techniques enabling active communication with young people with autism.

Carolyn Bateman received the provincial Volunteer of the Year award in 2005 and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship, recognizing her tremendous efforts in the field of autism treatment. She is also the first recipient of the Joan teRaa Memorial Award.

Carolyn Bateman will receive the 2010 Humanitarian Award from the Canadian Red Cross in Prince Edward Island for her tremendous efforts to help Islanders affected by autism. The organization also named Bobby Cameron, a graduate student from Hampton, PEI as its 2010 Young Humanitarian Award for the province.

They will receive their awards on November 3 at the Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Awards dinner, held at the Delta Prince Edward hotel. Proceeds from the fund-raising dinner support Red Cross disaster services and other programs throughout the Island.
